Why is Wrexham ideal for businesses?

Wrexham is becoming an increasingly prominent city for many reasons from its strong economy to its football team which is grabbing headlines around the world. It was awarded city status in 2022 and hasn’t looked back.

There are few better emerging business locations in the UK, and the local public and private sectors are both laser-focussed on ensuring that Wrexham continues to grow, evolve and success in the future.

Former Secretary of State for Wales, Sir Robert Buckland, said: “There is already much for Wrexham to be proud of and its future is equally exciting. I hope that the city of Wrexham continues to prosper and grow.”

There are already more than 12,000 businesses in Wrexham according to local council data – a figure which has increased by 76% in just over a decade. This is the highest rate of business growth in Wales and many of those companies have made substantial further investments in the area since establishing themselves.

In the future, the Wrexham region has forecasted growth of 2.8% a year according to the Welsh government’s Growth Vision and Strategy document which would give it an economy worth £20bn annually by 2035.

This growth rate would lead to the creation of 120,000 new jobs centred around Wrexham over that timeframe and a population increase of 10%. The nature of the city’s economy means that many of those would be in the manufacturing sector. Wrexham Council notes that 20% of the city’s workforce is in the manufacturing sector compared to 8% nationally – a well of talent that manufacturing companies cannot afford to miss out on.

It's not just the manufacturing sector, either. Wrexham was named one of the UK’s top seven ‘design cluster’ cities in the 2022 Design Economy report from the Design Council, with the sector seeing a 150% rise in employment since 2015. The retail sector is also going strong in Wrexham and employs 16,000 people, with 500,000 sqft of new retail space built in the last 20 years. Tourism is another great example of a sector thriving in Wrexham. The latest data from Global Tourism Solutions shows that the city’s visitor spend more than doubled and the number of visitors went up by a third in the last year.

All of these industries and businesses are enabled in part by a level of connectivity that has few rivals. It is minutes from the M53 and M56 from which you can head north, south, east and west easily, and reach Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, the Midlands and London without any hassle.

The road network also gives direct access to the west coast ports of Mostyn, Liverpool, Holyhead and Garston, as well as linking to the big east coast ports of Hull, Immingham and Felixstowe. Additionally, Manchester Airport and John Lennon Airport are both less than one hour away. Railway links from Wrexham General Station and Wrexham Central Station operate both passenger and freight trains across the UK.

Furthermore, the Wrexham Gateway project is underway and it is estimated that the redevelopments to Wrexham General Station will end up bringing an additional 60,000 people to the city each year. Additionally, part of the plan involves renovating Wrexham AFC’s stadium following the celebrity takeover and that will bring even more prosperity to the city.
